1) aquire a board of wood. Depending on the keyblade, you may need multiple layers. I usually use finished pine plywood because it's easy to carve. Plywood also has the advantage of having a straight, flat grain as opposed to straight/knotted, round grain which will have "soft spots" in the wood, causing accidental miscarvings.
2) find a reference image for your keyblade. You can find some good ones in the galleries of :iconMarduk-Kurios: and :iconGunZcon:
3) you can freehand sketch, use an outline to trace, or use ratio math and plot points on the board. I personally use the last one, here's how:
